Hope Makers Organization for Woman (HMOW) Observes Social Justice Day, Advocates for Yezidi Rights and Community Support
20/02/2024 - Hope Makers Organization for Woman (HMOW) commemorated Social Justice Day by hosting an event to champion civil rights, address inequality, poverty, and discrimination, and draw attention to the unique challenges faced by the Yezidi community.
Still grappling with the aftermath of the ISIS genocide, the Yezidi community continues to seek justice and reparations and calls for both national and international aid. In his opening speech, Mr. Shamoon Shlemon, Deputy Governor of Duhok, highlighted the transformative impact of women’s education on society. In a similar vein, Mr. Rodolphe Richard, the French Consul General in Erbil, reaffirmed France’s commitment to supporting the Sinjar community, emphasizing healthcare and mental health support initiatives.
Dr. Nagham, HMOW’s founder and executive manager, outlined the organization's work in Sinjar since 2021, where they have supported over 16,000 individuals, emphasizing the need for safe spaces to aid women’s recovery and community rebuilding efforts.
The event featured presentations by HMOW and Premiere Urgence Internationale (PUI) on preliminary findings from a survey investigating the correlation between mental health and economic vulnerability in Sinjar. A panel discussion led by activist and researcher Khider Domli included leaders from local NGOs and the Yezidi community. Key points discussed included ongoing conflicts, inadequate government support, economic hardship, and persistent social injustice affecting Yezidis.
HMOW expressed heartfelt gratitude to all attendees and reiterated its dedication to promoting social justice for the Yezidi community, particularly by advancing the rights of Yezidi women and girls. Supported by the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs, this event represents a collaborative effort between HMOW and PUI.
Stay tuned for updates on HMOW’s initiatives and for the official release of the survey findings shared during the event.
